Sicilian 2019 vintage marked by "balance in all respects"
This year’s vintage from Sicily will be marked by “balance in all respects, weather and climate, production and quality” according to Uva Sapiens founder and consultant Mattia Filippi.
Last year Sicily experienced its highest ever registered temperature in over a century, but was not adversely affected by the extremes of weather which afflicted other European regions.
Sicily, together with Piedmont and Tuscany, remains one of the most balanced Italian regions, which results in a limited production per hectare that ensures quality. Grapes benefited from summer rain while harvest times were prolonged, meaning slower maturation and a more limited sugar accumulation.
Cool temperatures during the harvest also helped preserve aromas and acidity in white grape varieties.
According to UniCredit the Sicilian wine industry is worth 550 million and growing. Last year sales were up by 6% and are predicted to exceed 100 million bottles in 2019.
