Speculation mounting over Freixenet sale to Henkell
German producer Henkell is rumoured to be close to acquiring the Cava brand Freixenet, with key meetings said to be lined up for this week.
Word of the possible sale of the Cava brand first came to light nearly two years ago, when it was repoted that Freixenet had received a buyout offer. At the time, Henkell confirmed that it had had talks with the Spanish company over a possible “co-operation”.
The Freixenet board was due to hold a meeting this week to firm up details of the sale according to a report in Economia Digital, which claimed that Henkell had agreed to buy a 51% controlling stake in the company with effect from May 2018.
However, the sale to date has been held up by the uncertain policitcal climate in Catalonia.
Wiesbaden-based Henkell includes a number of Sekt, Champagne, Prosecco and Cava producers in its range.
